What are electrolytes ? In short, they are mineral salts dissolved in intracellular and extracellular body fluids. These are, of course, essential minerals in themselves to maintain the normal functioning of our bodies, but during exercise – and this is especially true in the case of long-term, endurance sports – the presence and replacement of these trace elements* is of paramount importance. Every athlete who pushes their limits experiences a decrease in performance as training time passes and fatigue inevitably sets in – however, this is not always due to real fatigue, as in many cases the dysfunction that develops during exercise can be attributed to a lack of electrolytes lost through sweating.
